A sealed Pokémon or One Piece booster box can be worth several hundred euros. That is also why resealed boxes and counterfeits circulate, especially on classified ad sites. Here are the simple checks to make before buying, and once the box is in your hands.
1. The price: too good to be true?
A recent booster box sold well below its usual price should be a warning sign. Compare with prices from several sellers and with completed sales, not just current listings. To get an idea, check our booster box values and prices.
2. The seller: who is selling, and where does the box come from?
- Choose an identifiable shop: address, company registration number, legal notice, verifiable reviews.
- Ask where the product comes from and for an invoice. A reputable seller will have no problem answering.
- Beware of generic photos: ask for photos of the actual product from several angles.
3. The shrink wrap: the first clue
On a product that leaves the factory shrink-wrapped, the wrap is clean and tight, with neat, even seals. Warning signs:
- wrap that is loose, wrinkled or, on the contrary, unusually thick;
- irregular or doubled seals, or traces of glue;
- wrap that differs from official photos or from other copies of the same product.
Always compare with photos of an authentic copy of the same set and language: packaging can vary by country of release.
4. The box and the printing
- Dull colours, blurry text or spelling mistakes: a bad sign.
- Publisher logos (The Pokémon Company, Bandai) and legal text present and sharp.
- Well-formed box corners, with no signs of opening or re-gluing.
5. When opening: the packs
If you open the box, check that the number of packs matches what is stated, that each pack’s seals are even and that no pack seems to have been opened and resealed. Keep the wrap and the box until you have finished opening: you will need them if you have to make a claim.
